Project Description

This sail sculpture, designed in the inner courtyard of the Microsoft Executive Briefing Centre in Brussels, is intended as a covered outdoor coffee break area. What a pleasure to have a short coffee break outdoors in the middle of a vibrant city like Brussels! Al fresco lunching is especially popular in the summer months when temperatures and weather are most favorable, but during winter the covered area was welcome for people and guests who wanted to smoke a cigarette outside.

The sail protects both from sun and from rain, but does not cover all the terrace area: some people enjoy some direct sun rays during a short break.

Innovative system

The membrane structure is self-standing, without touching the existing building or facade. A stainless steel frame of 4,5 meters long square tubes forms the structural support under pressure and bending. The structure is at the same time the rain gutter system, to ensure that the rain does not drop from the textile roof. The rain water is drained into the ground (first floor) underneath the wooden deck. The frame is supported by large removable ground plates standing on the existing roof.
