The Sail Sculpture in this park is a result of a competition. It is designed to bring people together. Around the park is a care facility for the elderly, as well as a school and a kindergarten.
The sail is designed as a central place of encounter, between the elderly and the young. It is simply a nice place for the elderly to sit down, watching the kids playing cheerfully around. But is is also a nice place to enjoy the outdoors together with visiting family or friends.
In the course of its existence, the sail often appears to be used by the citizens of Zoutleeuw as a backdrop for wedding parties or small-scale performances (classical music, gatherings, …)
This sail proves that an ‘enclosure’ can be much more than ‘just’ an enclosure: as an ‘architectural sculpture’, well placed and with the right lighting, this place really works as the beating heart in the centre of this park.
The fabric is very durable, made of glass fibre coated with PTFE. The masts and wires are made of stainless steel AISI 316, to ensure a long lifespan. After more than 10 years we note that the membrane is still very beautiful, white and enjoyable.
