an alfresco lunch area @ work !

Project Description: a beautiful al fresco lunch area

This sail sculpture, designed in the courtyard of an office complex, is intended as a covered outdoor lunch and coffee break area in the central courtyard / garden of the PWC office building (main quarters Brussels). What a pleasure to have your lunch or coffee break outdoors in the middle of a beautiful garden! Al fresco dining is especially popular in the summer months when temperatures and weather are most favorable, but during winter the covered area was welcome for people and guests who wanted to smoke a cigarette outside.

The sail protects both from sun and from rain, but does not cover all the terrace area: some people enjoy some sun rays during a short break.

Innovative Solution

From a technical point of view, this sail sculpture is a feast of high technology that makes sense: the prestressed architectural membrane is supported in the middle by a ‘floating’ or ‘flying’ mast that is lifted with cables from the side. This creates an open and very dimensionally stable structure with a large free span: 25 meters in length and 13 meters in width. The membrane is calculated for wind and snow loads and stays in place during every season.

This tarp has been used for more then 2 decades by now.

Design Approach: integrated into a Wirtz Garden

The architectural tensioned sail has been integrated into the roof garden as much as possible and is aesthetically anchored to the design of landscape architect Maarten Wirtz. The trees are embraced, the undulating movements of the low vegetation continue.

The organic form of the tensile structure is in beautiful contrast with the straight lines of the glazed facade. The wide curves of the canopy swing around the giant sequoias.

Why a covered outdoor space in an office building?

We decided not to limit the sail cover just to the terrace strictly spoken, but to extend it wider into the garden. This invites the users to walk around the courtyard garden, even with bad weather. In this way, the people working in this office get more freedom of movement and fresh oxygen. If you choose to sit in the sun besides the sail cover, along the deep-cut arches of the sail.
Nothing is more pleasant than spending time outside under the tarp during a warm summer rain and enjoying the blooming scents that are released in humid weather. Meetings as well as parties can now be organised outside in the garden. With the right lighting, the atmosphere is simply magical.
